Introduction
Revelation Chapter 8 continues the unfolding of divine judgment, beginning with the opening of the seventh seal, which introduces a period of heavenly silence followed by the appearance of seven angels prepared to sound seven trumpets. Before the trumpets begin, another angel offers incense mixed with the prayers of God’s people at the altar before the throne, symbolizing the connection between the prayers of the faithful and the unfolding judgments about to take place on the earth. This moment emphasizes the seriousness and solemnity of the events that follow.
As the first four trumpets sound, dramatic and destructive events strike the earth, sea, rivers, and sky. Hail and fire mixed with blood burn a third of the earth and trees, while something resembling a great burning mountain falls into the sea, turning a third of it to blood and destroying much marine life. Additionally, a great star falls upon the rivers and springs of water, making them bitter and causing suffering, while the fourth trumpet darkens a third of the sun, moon, and stars, reducing daylight and nighttime brightness. The chapter closes with a warning of even greater trouble to come, as an eagle proclaims woes upon the earth in anticipation of the remaining trumpet judgments.
