Introduction
Acts chapter 6 addresses an important administrative and spiritual challenge faced by the growing early church. As the number of believers increased, a dispute arose among the Hellenistic Jewish believers who felt that Greek speaking widows were being overlooked in the daily distribution of food, while Hebrew speaking widows received fair treatment. This complaint threatened to create division within the community and required a thoughtful response from the apostles.
To resolve this issue, the apostles instructed the community to select seven men of good reputation, full of the Holy Spirit and wisdom, to oversee the practical needs of the congregation. This allowed the apostles to focus on prayer and the ministry of the word without being burdened by administrative responsibilities. Among the seven chosen was Stephen, a man described as full of faith and the Holy Spirit, who would play a significant role in the events of the following chapters.
The chapter concludes by introducing the growing opposition Stephen faced from certain Jewish leaders who could not withstand the wisdom and power with which he spoke. Unable to refute his arguments, they resorted to false accusations, claiming that Stephen had spoken blasphemous words against Moses and God. Stephen was brought before the council, setting the stage for his powerful defense and eventual martyrdom recorded in the following chapter. This chapter highlights the practical wisdom of the early church leadership and the increasing tension between the growing Christian movement and Jewish religious authorities.
