Introduction
1 Timothy Chapter 3 outlines the qualifications and character required for church leadership, specifically addressing the roles of overseers, also known as bishops or elders, and deacons. Paul begins by affirming that the desire to serve as an overseer is a noble aspiration, then lists the qualities necessary for this role, including being above reproach, faithful to one’s spouse, self controlled, sensible, respectable, hospitable, and skilled in teaching. He also states that an overseer must not be given to drunkenness, violence, or greed, but instead should be gentle, peaceable, and free from the love of money, while also managing his own household well and having his children behave respectfully.
Paul cautions against appointing a recent convert to this position, warning that such a person might become conceited and fall into the same judgment as the devil. He also emphasizes that an overseer must have a good reputation among outsiders, so as not to fall into disgrace or the devil’s trap.
Paul then turns to the qualifications for deacons, similarly emphasizing character traits such as being worthy of respect, sincere, not given to too much wine, and not greedy for money, while also holding firmly to the mysteries of the faith with a clear conscience. He notes that deacons should first be tested before serving, and that their wives, or the women serving alongside them, should also be worthy of respect and trustworthy.
Paul explains that those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing and increased confidence in their faith in Christ Jesus. The chapter closes with Paul expressing his hope to visit Timothy soon, but writing these instructions so that Timothy will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, the church, which he describes as the pillar and foundation of the truth, before closing with a brief reflection on the mystery of godliness revealed through Christ.
