Proverbs 9 serves as the conclusion to the opening section of Proverbs (chapters 1–9). Throughout these chapters, Solomon has repeatedly contrasted wisdom and foolishness. In this final chapter, he presents them as two women, each inviting people to a banquet.
The chapter begins with Lady Wisdom preparing a magnificent feast (verses 1–6). She has built her house, prepared her food, mixed her wine, and sent out her servants to invite everyone, especially those who are simple and inexperienced. Her invitation is to leave behind foolishness, gain understanding, and walk in the way of life. Wisdom offers spiritual nourishment, maturity, and a life that honors God.
In verses 7-12, Solomon explains how different people respond to correction. A mocker rejects rebuke and may even hate the one who corrects him, while a wise person welcomes instruction and grows from it.
The chapter ends by introducing Lady Folly (verses 13–18). Like Wisdom, she calls out to those passing by, but her invitation is deceptive. She promises excitement and secret pleasures, saying, “Stolen water is sweet, and food eaten in secret is delicious.” However, those who accept her invitation do not realize that her house is filled with death. What appears pleasurable ultimately leads to destruction.
By placing these two invitations side by side, Solomon emphasizes that every person continually faces a choice between God’s wisdom and the world’s foolishness.
Chapter 9
1 Wisdom has made her house, putting up her seven pillars.
2 She has put her fat beasts to death; her wine is mixed, her table is ready.
3 She has sent out her women-servants; her voice goes out to the highest places of the town, saying,
4 Whoever is simple, let him come in here; and to him who has no sense, she says:
5 Come, take of my bread, and of my wine which is mixed.
6 Give up the simple ones and have life, and go in the way of knowledge.
7 He who gives teaching to a man of pride gets shame for himself; he who says sharp words to a sinner gets a bad name.
8 Do not say sharp words to a man of pride, or he will have hate for you; make them clear to a wise man, and you will be dear to him.
9 Give teaching to a wise man, and he will become wiser; give training to an upright man, and his learning will be increased.
10 The fear of the Lord is the start of wisdom, and the knowledge of the Holy One gives a wise mind
11 For by me your days will be increased, and the years of your life will be long.
12 If you are wise, you are wise for yourself; if your heart is full of pride, you only will have the pain of it.
13 The foolish woman is full of noise; she has no sense at all.
14 Seated at the door of her house, in the high places of the town,
15 Crying out to those who go by, going straight on their way, she says:
16 Whoever is simple, let him come in here: and to him who is without sense, she says:
17 Drink taken without right is sweet, and food in secret is pleasing.
18 But he does not see that the dead are there, that her guests are in the deep places of the underworld.
Important Verses
Proverbs 9:6 – “Leave your simple ways and you will live; walk in the way of insight.” Wisdom invites people to abandon foolishness and pursue spiritual maturity.
Proverbs 9:8–9 – “Rebuke the wise and they will love you… Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still.” A teachable heart is one of the defining marks of a wise person.
Proverbs 9:10 – “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” This is one of the foundational verses of Proverbs, teaching that all true wisdom starts with reverence for God.
Proverbs 9:17–18 – “Stolen water is sweet… But little do they know that the dead are there.” Sin may appear appealing, but its end is death and separation from God’s best.
