The Fear of the Lord: How Reverence for God Helps Us Avoid Evil

Have you ever wondered why the Bible says, “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom”? At first, this statement may sound strange. Why would fearing God be connected to wisdom?

The fear of the Lord is not the same as being terrified that God will hurt or reject you. For those who trust in Christ, God is a loving Father. Biblical fear means reverence, awe, humility, and a deep desire to honor Him. It means understanding that God is holy, that His ways are good, and that sin can lead us into painful consequences.

When you truly fear the Lord, you begin to see temptation differently, you stop asking only, “Can I do this?” and start asking, “Will this honor God?”

The Fear of the Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom

Proverbs teaches us that wisdom begins when we recognize who God is:

“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom, and knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.” ,  Proverbs 9:10

Wisdom does not begin with intelligence, experience, or human advice. It begins with surrender to God. A person may know many facts and still make destructive choices, but someone who reveres the Lord seeks to follow Him, even when obedience is difficult.

The fear of God helps us understand that our decisions matter, our actions affect our relationship with God, our future, and the people around us. It also reminds us that God sees what others cannot see, including our thoughts, motives, and secret struggles.

This kind of reverence protects us from treating sin casually, we begin to realize that disobedience is not merely “breaking a rule.” Sin is turning away from the God who loves us and wants what is truly good for us.

A Personal Lesson About Temptation and Purity

When I was sixteen years old, I met a girl through church. Here in Brazil, it is common for Christians to visit other congregations and meet new brothers and sisters in Christ, that was how I met her.

At the time, she had a boyfriend, so although I thought she was beautiful, I chose not to pursue her. Later, after they broke up, we became closer and decided to meet. In my mind, however, I knew that my intentions were not right, We were thinking about making out without any genuine commitment.

I understood that physical intimacy was not created merely for entertainment or temporary pleasure. God designed it to be part of a committed marriage relationship. The Bible says:

“Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure.” ,  Hebrews 13:4

This does not mean that every relationship must immediately lead to marriage(specially considering that we were teenagers), It does mean that our romantic and physical choices should reflect God’s design, purity, self-control, and respect for one another.

Around that time, the girl told one of my friends about a dream she had. In the dream, I was going further with her sexually, when my friend told me about it, I felt deeply convicted and afraid of making a serious mistake. I decided to tell her that we could not continue in that direction, she agreed that it would be wrong.

Looking back, I cannot prove exactly what that dream meant. We should always be careful about interpreting dreams or calling every unusual event a direct message from God. However, God certainly used that moment to awaken my conscience and lead me away from temptation.

The important lesson was not the dream itself but was that I had to choose whether I would obey God or follow my desires.

The Fear of the Lord Helps Us Avoid Evil

Years later, I read Proverbs 16:6:

“Through love and faithfulness sin is atoned for; through the fear of the LORD evil is avoided.” ,  Proverbs 16:6

This verse reminded me of that experience, the fear of the Lord can help us avoid evil because it changes the way we respond to temptation.

Without reverence for God, we may think:

• “No one will ever know.”
• “It is only a small sin.”
• “I can stop whenever I want.”
• “Everyone else is doing it.”
• “God will forgive me anyway.”

But the fear of the Lord brings us back to truth, it reminds us that forgiveness should never be used as an excuse to continue sinning. God’s grace does not make sin harmless, his grace rescues us from sin and teaches us to live differently.

Paul wrote:

“The grace of God has appeared that offers salvation to all people. It teaches us to say ‘No’ to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives.” ,  Titus 2:11–12

God’s grace does not merely forgive your past. It also gives you strength to make better choices today.

Joseph Shows Us the Power of Fearing God

One of the clearest examples of this principle is Joseph. While serving in Potiphar’s house, Joseph was tempted by Potiphar’s wife, she tried to persuade him to sleep with her, but Joseph refused.

His response is powerful:

“How then could I do such a wicked thing and sin against God?” ,  Genesis 39:9

Notice Joseph’s perspective. He did not say only, “This could damage my reputation,” or, “I might get caught.” He understood that sin would be an offense against God.

Joseph feared the Lord, and that fear gave him the strength to run away. His obedience did not immediately make his life easier, in fact, he was falsely accused and sent to prison. But he preserved his integrity, and God continued to be with him.

Sometimes obeying God will cost you a relationship, an opportunity, your comfort, or your reputation. Yet temporary loss is better than gaining something that damages your soul.

We should not imagine every possible consequence of disobedience until we become trapped in anxiety. Instead, Joseph’s story teaches us to focus on the choice in front of us: Will I honor God right now?

How Can You Grow in the Fear of the Lord?

The fear of the Lord grows as you spend time knowing God and allowing His Word to shape your heart. Here are some practical steps:

1. Read the Bible consistently

God’s Word reveals His character, His holiness, His love, and His will. The more you know Him, the more naturally you will desire to honor Him.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” ,  Psalm 119:105

2. Pray before making important decisions

Do not wait until after you have fallen into temptation to ask for help. Pray when the desire first appears, ask God for wisdom, self-control, and courage to walk away.

3. Take temptation seriously

Do not place yourself unnecessarily in situations where you know you are weak, set clear boundaries in relationships, online activities, entertainment, and private conversations.

4. Remember God’s presence

You may be alone, but you are never outside God’s sight. This should not make you feel hopeless or constantly afraid, it should encourage you to remember that God is near and wants to help you.

5. Run toward God, not away from Him

When you fail, confess your sin instead of hiding. Through Jesus Christ, there is forgiveness and restoration.

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” ,  1 John 1:9

Conclusion: Reverence for God Can Change Your Life

The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom because it places God at the center of your decisions. It helps you recognize the seriousness of sin, resist temptation, and choose what honors Him, even when nobody else is watching.

My experience as a teenager taught me that one decision can change the direction of your life. I do not know what would have happened if I had ignored my conscience and continued down that path. But I am grateful that God used that moment to lead me away from something that could have brought pain, guilt, and destruction.

The same God who guided me is willing to guide you. Ask Him to give you a heart that reveres Him, not a heart controlled by terror, but one filled with humility, love, obedience, and trust.

If you have never surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, you can do that today. Jesus died for your sins and rose again so that you can be forgiven, reconciled to God, and given a new life. Salvation is not earned through good behavior; it is received by faith in Christ.

You can pray:

“Lord Jesus, I recognize that I am a sinner and that I need Your forgiveness. I believe You died for my sins and rose again. I surrender my life to You and receive You as my only Lord and Savior. Teach me to fear You, follow Your Word, and live in a way that honors You. Amen.”
