When God’s Timing Doesn’t Make Sense: Lessons from Joseph’s Unwavering Faith

Have you ever done everything right and still ended up in the worst possible situation?

You stayed faithful. You made the hard choice. You trusted God. And then… everything fell apart anyway.

That’s exactly what happened to Joseph. And his story is one of the most powerful testimonies in the Bible about what it means to trust God’s timing , even when nothing makes sense.

Joseph’s First Test: Doing Right and Getting Punished

Joseph had already been through so much. Betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, torn from everything he knew. Yet “the Lord was with Joseph, and he became a successful man” (Genesis 39:2). He prospered in Potiphar’s house, earning trust and favor.

Then came the test. Potiphar’s wife tried to seduce him day after day. Joseph could have given in. He was far from home, alone, a slave with no one to hold him accountable. But he refused, saying, “How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?” (Genesis 39:9).

He did the right thing. He honored God. He protected his integrity.

And what was his reward? Prison.

Let that sink in. Joseph chose righteousness and ended up in chains, if anyone had a reason to feel abandoned by God, it was him. Yet the Bible tells us “the Lord was with Joseph” even in that dungeon (Genesis 39:21). Joseph didn’t give up, he didn’t become bitter. He continued to walk in faith, and even in prison, he gained the keeper’s trust and served with excellence.

Joseph’s Second Test: Forgotten When Hope Finally Appeared

While in prison, Joseph interpreted dreams for two of Pharaoh’s officials , the cupbearer and the baker. When Joseph told the cupbearer that he would be restored to his position, he made a simple request: “Remember me when it is well with you” (Genesis 40:14).

Imagine the hope Joseph must have felt. Finally, a way out. Someone who could speak to Pharaoh on his behalf.

But “the chief cupbearer did not remember Joseph, but forgot him” (Genesis 40:23).

Two more years passed. Two years of waiting. Two years of wondering if God had forgotten him too.

But here’s what’s stunning: Joseph could have become angry, cynical, or hardened. Instead, he kept his faith, he kept serving, he kept trusting that God had a plan, even when he couldn’t see it.

Joseph’s Breakthrough: God’s Perfect Timing Revealed

Then, when the time was right , God’s time, not Joseph’s , Pharaoh had a dream. Suddenly, the cupbearer remembered Joseph, and in one day, Joseph went from prisoner to governor of all Egypt (Genesis 41).

Think about this: if the cupbearer had remembered Joseph earlier and secured his release through his influence, Joseph might have simply returned to a normal life. He wouldn’t have been in prison when Pharaoh needed someone to interpret his dream. He wouldn’t have become second-in-command of Egypt, he wouldn’t have been in position to save entire nations from famine , including his own family.

Joseph had to lose his job in Potiphar’s house to gain a nation, he had to stay in prison longer than expected to be ready for a palace, he had to be forgotten by man so he could be remembered by God at the perfect moment.

Through Joseph’s position, “all the earth came to Egypt to buy grain” (Genesis 41:57). God used Joseph’s pain, delays, and disappointments to position him to save the world.

What Joseph’s Story Teaches Us About God’s Timing

Sometimes we fight so hard for opportunities that slip through our fingers. We grieve lost chances, closed doors, and unanswered prayers. But what if those “losses” are actually divine protections? What if God is preparing you for something far greater than what you’re asking for right now?

Here’s what we learn from Joseph:

Your faithfulness matters even when no one sees it. God saw Joseph’s integrity in Potiphar’s house, and He saw his excellent work in prison
Delays are not denials. The cupbearer’s forgetfulness felt like abandonment, but it was actually perfect timing
God wastes nothing. Every trial, every disappointment, every “setback” was preparing Joseph for his destiny
You’re not forgotten. Even when people forget you, God never does

“For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope” (Jeremiah 29:11).

Keep the Faith When Nothing Makes Sense

If you’re in a season of waiting right now, let Joseph’s story encourage you. Maybe you did the right thing and got punished for it, maybe someone promised to help you and forgot, maybe you’re wondering if God even sees you.

You may be in Potiphar’s house or a prison cell or a season of being forgotten, but God is writing a story bigger than you can imagine. His timing is perfect, even when it’s painful, what feels like a loss today might be the very thing that positions you for breakthrough tomorrow.

Keep serving with excellence. Keep honoring God, keep your faith , not because everything makes sense, but because God is faithful even when circumstances aren’t.

Joseph didn’t know he was being groomed to govern a nation, he just stayed faithful one day at a time. And when God’s moment came, he was ready.

Choose Jesus Today

If Joseph’s story has stirred something in your heart, maybe it’s because God is inviting you into a deeper relationship with Him. Maybe He’s calling you to trust Him with your own waiting season, your disappointments, your unanswered questions.

The same God who was with Joseph in the pit, in Potiphar’s house, and in prison wants to be with you today , not just as a distant figure, but as your Savior and Lord.

Jesus Christ came to this earth, died on a cross, and rose again so that you could have forgiveness, purpose, and eternal life. He didn’t just come to give you a better story , He came to give you Himself.

You can pray something like this:

“Lord Jesus, I believe You are the Son of God. I believe You died for my sins and rose from the dead. Forgive me for the ways I’ve turned away from You, I surrender my life to You today. Be my Savior and my Lord, help me to trust Your timing, even when I don’t understand. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
