Friends is one of the most watched sitcoms around the world. My generation discovered Friends through Netflix, and even though I enjoyed the show, as a Christian, many elements made me reflect on how Satan used not only Friends but many old sitcoms to destroy the 90s and 2000s generations. The increase in divorce, the constant sexual immorality, and the normalization of pornography were just some of the topics that concerned me. So, I felt led to write something about it, as Christians need to be cautious about what we are watching so the Devil cannot manipulate us.

1 – Grab A Spoon

In the first episode, Ross is introduced as a man whose wife left him after discovering she was a lesbian. Joey, on the other hand, is presented as a “player,” constantly with different women. These two characters represent key issues.
At some point, they are talking in Joey’s apartment, and Ross says how great it would be if there were only one woman for each man. Joey quickly mocks this idea, saying it’s like only having one flavor of ice cream. He encourages Ross to “grab a spoon” and enjoy the variety.
Brothers and sisters, Satan is smart. He knew in the 70s, 80s, 90s, and even into the 2000s that TV was the best way to influence people. So, he used producers to create movies and sitcoms to manipulate generations into copying what they watched. When Satan wants to attack a generation, he targets the youth because their knowledge is limited and they are more vulnerable. Many heard Joey’s quote in the 90s and thought, “That’s true. Why have just one woman when I can have many?”
Much of the objectification of women in our culture stems from these messages. The producers and actors were unknowingly puppets in Satan’s hands. He knew that if he could destroy the mindset of holiness in the youth, it would impact future generations, and that’s exactly what we’re seeing today.
2 – Normalizing Sexual Immorality And Divorce

Immoral Sex
Throughout the show, all the characters had multiple relationships. Breakups happened frequently, and premarital sex was treated as completely normal. This greatly influenced youth mentality. While Friends wasn’t the first sitcom to portray these themes, it amplified the message because of its global popularity.
Rachel had 14 boyfriends, Monica 13, Phoebe 17, Chandler 7, and Ross 14. The Bible says bad company corrupts good character, and as youth watched Friends, they started to relate to the characters and imitate their behavior.

Satan’s strategy was to manipulate those who still held on to a mindset of purity passed down by their parents. His goal was to replace the biblical view of sex with a casual, sin-tolerant one. He succeeded, and now many grow up already desensitized to sexual immorality.

Treating Pornography As Something Innocent
Another tactic was to portray pornography as fun and harmless. In one episode, the group finds Joey’s porn tape, and they all laugh and joke about it, sending the message that pornography is acceptable.
The problem is that this made many fall into bondage. Pornography is addictive, like a drug. It often starts with images, progresses to videos, and eventually becomes a deeper bondage. This leads to objectifying women, sexual addiction, and even marital infidelity. Satan wrapped pornography in a pretty package, but inside that package is death.

Destroying the Idea of Marriage
Satan also used Friends to belittle marriage. Ross had three divorces, reinforcing the idea that divorce is normal. Chandler and Joey mocked Ross for marrying as a virgin, and many other moments in the show cast marriage in a negative light.
A particularly impactful example is the relationship between Monica and Dr. Richard. He was 21 years older and had only ever been with his ex-wife. Monica asks if he regrets not enjoying his youth. He says no, but when he reveals he doesn’t want more children, Monica ends the relationship.
The Devil’s subtle plan here was to plant a message: marrying young and staying faithful leads to regret. So people thought, “I won’t marry too soon. I’ll enjoy life first, then settle down later.”
Conclusion
Sadly, Satan’s plan was successful, and now we live with the consequences. While we know the world will get worse before Christ returns, this serves as a serious warning. Be careful not only about what you watch but about how it influences you. Satan is the great deceiver. If he deceived angels, don’t think he can’t deceive you. Be vigilant.
