Before Hannah had her first child, she endured deep adversity. But her son wasn’t just any child, he was Samuel, one of the greatest men in the history of Israel. One thing I’ve learned about walking with God is this:
“The harder the test, the greater the blessing.”
When God is preparing something powerful for your life, the tests will also be intense. That’s why we must prepare our hearts, just like Hannah did, so we can overcome through faith and experience God’s purpose.
Today, let’s dive into Hannah’s story and discover how she triumphed over her pain by believing in a word declared by a prophet, a word that changed her life forever.

1 – Hannah And Peninnah
1 Samuel 1:6 (KJV):
“And her adversary also provoked her sore, for to make her fret, because the Lord had shut up her womb.”

To understand Hannah’s pain, we need to know the context. Her husband, Elkanah, had two wives, Peninnah, who had children, and Hannah, whom he loved deeply but who had no children. In that time, having children was considered a major part of a woman’s purpose, so Hannah’s barrenness brought her public shame and deep sorrow.
Peninnah, likely jealous of the love Elkanah had for Hannah, mocked her relentlessly. And as painful as Peninnah’s words were, the Bible clearly states that God Himself had shut up Hannah’s womb. Why? Because He had a divine plan—Hannah needed to go through a season of testing to be prepared for the calling tied to her son.
2 – Hannah Change Her Prayer

Sometimes, God allows suffering to draw us closer and to shape our prayers. It’s often in moments of pain that we finally begin to pray with clarity and surrender.
Each year, the family went to the temple to worship and offer sacrifices. The Bible doesn’t record Hannah praying for a son every time, but on one specific visit, something shifted. That time, Hannah changed her prayer. She didn’t just ask for a son, she made a vow:
If God would give her a son, she would dedicate him to the Lord for all the days of his life.
As she prayed from her heart, Eli the priest saw her and mistook her sorrowful, silent prayer for drunkenness. But when she explained her pain, Eli spoke a prophetic word over her, saying, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant thee thy petition.”
And Hannah believed.
3 – The fulfillment Of The Promise

Soon after, Hannah returned home and conceived. God remembered her, and Samuel was born—a man who would become a prophet, a judge, and a priest. He would anoint kings and help shape the future of Israel.
But here’s the beautiful part: Hannah kept her promise. She brought Samuel to the temple when he was still young and dedicated him to God. And later, Scripture tells us that God blessed Hannah with many more children.
This story teaches us two powerful truths:
-
Sometimes we must pray differently to receive what God is waiting to give.
-
And when we trust in a prophetic word, God will honor our faith.
Conclusion
What does Hannah’s story teach us about faith? When facing adversity, she chose to trust in the word of the prophet. And because of her faith, God changed her story, from barren to blessed, from sorrow to joy, from waiting to fulfillment.
