David was one of the greatest kings in the history of Israel, but before he ever sat on the throne, he went through a long and challenging journey. Today, let’s explore what David did before becoming king. Was he patient in waiting for God’s promises to be fulfilled in his life? Or did he actively prepare for what was coming? Let’s find out together.

1 – He Grew In Maturity
1 Samuel 23:13 (KJV):
“And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the Lord was with him.”

According to the Bible, David was a young man, likely between 14 and 17 years old—when he was anointed by the prophet Samuel. Despite that, he only became king over Israel when he turned 30. So, what did he do while he waited for his time to come? He prepared himself!
Many times, when God declares His promises over our lives, they are meant for the future. Before we receive the blessing, there is often a journey of preparation. In David’s life, it was no different. First, he became King Saul’s musician. Later, he had the opportunity to defeat Goliath and then became one of the king’s soldiers. After that, Saul grew jealous of David, forcing him to flee for his life.
But notice how many things David went through before the promise was fulfilled, before the blessing, there is always a season of preparation and maturity.
2 – He Learned How To Act Like A King

One thing I’ve learned in my walk with God is this: what God has for you is already inside of you. Even though David wasn’t officially the king of Israel yet, he was already acting like a king, leading and guiding his men while they were hiding from King Saul in the cave of Adullam.
Today, I invite you to pray and ask God to reveal His purpose for your life. Once you clearly understand God’s calling, you won’t waste time chasing distractions—you’ll focus on preparing for the moment when His promise is fulfilled in your life!
3 – He Knew God’s Timing Was Better Than His

David always trusted in God, so he knew that no matter how many years passed, God would fulfill His promises for his life. Before anyone knew his name, David killed both a lion and a bear—so when Goliath appeared, he was already prepared. Based on his past experiences with God, he could remind himself: God is faithful to His promises!
David began to reign at the age of 30, and even though he waited many years, we never read anything about him doubting God. When you truly know the God you serve, there’s no room for disbelief. Even in the hardest moments, David knew God’s timing was better than his own.
Conclusion
If David had received the opportunity to reign earlier, while he was still a teenager, he likely wouldn’t have been ready for the great responsibility of becoming king. But throughout David’s story, we clearly see God’s hand preparing him every step of the way for his future role.
Brothers and sisters, trust in God’s perfect timing. Believe it or not, His ways are far greater than ours. God always knows what’s best for us. So here’s my advice: Do your part, remain faithful, and trust in the Lord, because He will always be faithful to do His.
