God’s Test Of Obedience: How To Be Approved?

Matthew 4:1 (KJV):
“Then was Jesus led up of the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted of the devil.”

Have You Ever Felt Like You’re in the Wilderness?
When God wants to move in our lives, He often leads us into a season of lack or difficulty. Why? Because it’s in those tough, dry places that we finally stop and listen. When everything is going smoothly, we tend to forget about seeking God with our whole hearts. But in the wilderness—when things are hard—we naturally draw closer to Him, and that’s when we become more sensitive to His voice and His direction.

But that’s not where it ends. Once God reveals His will to us, it’s up to us to respond with obedience. If we don’t, we risk staying stuck—or even dying—in that place of lack, never stepping into the full life God has for us.

God's Test

In today’s article, we’re diving into why it’s so hard to pass God’s test of obedience, and more importantly, how you can overcome your struggles and walk in the purpose God designed for you.

1 – Meditate In God’s Word Daily

Joshua 1:8 (KJV):
“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.”

Are You Really Meditating on God’s Word—Or Just Saying You Do?
We all know the Bible tells us to meditate on God’s Word day and night—but the real question is: Are we actually doing it? In times of spiritual warfare, the time you’ve spent in the Word makes all the difference. When Jesus was in the wilderness and the devil came to tempt Him, He didn’t fight back with emotions—He fought back with Scripture. That’s why reading and meditating on the Bible is crucial if you want to stand strong when the day of trouble comes.

Think of it like this: Bible verses are your ammunition, and God’s Word is your weapon. If you don’t have Scripture stored in your heart, what are you going to fight with when temptation hits? The fewer verses you have ready, the weaker your defense will be.

So don’t wait until the battle starts—prepare now. Spend time in the Word. Let the Holy Spirit fill your heart and mind with truth. When hard times come, He’ll remind you of what you’ve read, and you’ll have the power to overcome every scheme of the enemy.

2 – Intensify Praying & Fasting Moments

Luke 5:33-35 (KJV):
“And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink? And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them? But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.”

Fasting and Prayer Are Like the Wings of an Eagle—You Can’t Fly Without Both
You can’t grow spiritually if you’re only doing one part of the job. Reading the Bible and fasting are powerful, but without a strong prayer life, you’re missing a major piece. Prayer and fasting go hand in hand—like the wings of an eagle. One without the other won’t get you off the ground!

If you want to grow in your relationship with God, you need all three: daily prayer, fasting, and reading the Word. This spiritual triad is essential for every Christian who wants to stay alive and strong in their faith. Without it, you’re basically going into spiritual battle without a weapon—asking to be defeated.

In this article, I’ll share some practical tips to help you develop a deeper and more effective prayer life. These steps will strengthen your walk with God and prepare you for the spiritual battles ahead.

1 – Pray Against the Devil’s Schemes

Never forget: you have real enemies working behind the scenes—Satan and his demons are constantly trying to destroy your life. That’s why your prayers need to be intentional and bold.

Ask God to break every plan of the enemy over your life. Pray for spiritual discernment so you can recognize when something is a trap from the devil. When you stay spiritually alert and rooted in prayer, you’re not caught off guard—you stay one step ahead.

Spiritual warfare is real, but you’re not fighting alone. With God on your side and a strong prayer life, the enemy doesn’t stand a chance.

2 – Ask God for a Heart Like His

Pray and ask God to give you a heart that reflects His—one that stays faithful no matter how hard life gets. You can even ask Him for a heart like Joseph’s, who remained obedient even in betrayal, temptation, and suffering.

3 – Use the Gift of Speaking in Tongues

If the Holy Spirit has given you the gift of speaking in tongues, use it often and boldly. The Bible says that when we speak in tongues, we build ourselves up spiritually (1 Corinthians 14:4). That’s why it’s such a powerful tool—especially during moments of spiritual warfare.

Here’s a tip: during a fast, set aside time to pray in tongues for at least 1–2 hours. You’ll be amazed at how your spirit is strengthened. It feeds your soul, sharpens your discernment, and increases your power to resist the attacks of the enemy.

Don’t leave this gift unused—speaking in tongues is a spiritual weapon, and it will help you walk in victory.

3 – Remove Distractions

1 John 2:15-17 (KJV):
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth forever.”

On your walk with Christ, if you don’t remove distractions, it will be much harder to stand strong in difficult times. Why? Because when you don’t spend time meditating on God’s Word, your spiritual strength will be low when adversity hits.

Let’s be real—distractions are everywhere. I’ve even caught myself spending 40 minutes just watching cat videos on YouTube Shorts. It’s not a sin, but it is a trap. That time could’ve been used for prayer or reading the Bible. Social media apps like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube make it way too easy to waste entire hours without realizing it.

So here’s the challenge: discipline yourself. Be intentional with your time. Don’t let the enemy rob you of your intimacy with God. Invest in your relationship with Him daily—He’s the one who gives you the strength to overcome every trial.

3 – Be Aware Of Pride

Proverbs 16:18 (KJV):
“Pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.”

There were moments in my life when everything seemed to be going great. I was growing in intimacy with God—reading the Word, praying, fasting. I felt full of joy and strong in the Spirit. But let me tell you, that’s exactly when the enemy comes with seeds of pride.

I remember having intrusive thoughts—imagining people at my funeral saying how amazing I was. Sounds crazy, but that’s how sneaky pride can be. Suddenly, I found myself falling. Why? Because I started thinking I was “too strong to fall.” That’s a dangerous mindset.

Brothers and sisters, you don’t have to be doing anything wrong to fall—just being in the wrong posture is enough. Always walk in humility. Reject any thought that tries to puff you up. The enemy is subtle—he’ll use flattery and even your own spiritual progress to bring pride into your heart.

Stay alert, stay low, and stay surrendered.

Conclusion

Today, we’ve learned how to walk into our breakthrough with God and avoid falling into the enemy’s traps. Remember, God will never give you anything you can’t handle. The key to receiving God’s promises is simple—obedience. Stay faithful to His instructions and pass the test of obedience.
