The Importance Of Obedience In A Christian Life

“But Samuel replied: ‘Does the Lord delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices as much as in obeying the Lord? To obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed is better than the fat of rams.'”
1 Samuel 15:22

Throughout the whole Bible, we see the theme of obedience and how important it is. In fact, the Bible even says that God values obedience more than sacrifices.

Saul lost his kingdom because of disobedience. That shows just how serious God is about it. Even Jesus says that on the last day, many people who did great things, like casting out demons, will come to Him and still not receive salvation because of their iniquity. So today, let’s explore a few points that can help us understand this topic better.

1 – Your Intimacy With The Holy Spirit Grows

Jesus laughing with the apostles

“But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.”
John 16:13

According to Jesus, those who truly love Him will obey His instructions. Once they do, the Holy Spirit of truth will come upon them, and they will be guided by Him. He will reveal all truth!

As Christians, we know that the Holy Spirit is God Himself. He’s not just a force—He is a person who dwells within us because we are His temples (1 Corinthians 6:19). In the Bible, God is often revealed as the Bridegroom, and the Church is His Bride. Now, imagine if your wife were constantly cheating on you—could your relationship, your intimacy, or even your friendship grow? Of course not. It’s the same with God. No matter how beautiful your words are, if you’re living in sin, it’s like nothing to Him. That’s where repentance becomes so important.

2 – God Reveals Himself  To The Obedient

“Whoever has my commands and keeps them is the one who loves me. The one who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love them and show myself to them.”
John 14:21

According to Jesus, those who keep His commands are the ones who truly love Him. You see, there are many churchgoers on earth, but not all of them obey Christ. These are not the ones who truly love Him.

Jesus says that He will reveal Himself to those who follow His words—not partially, but completely. Those who seek Him wholeheartedly will receive the Holy Spirit, intimacy with God, and spiritual experiences. If you want to become an intimate friend of the Holy Spirit and start having your own spiritual experiences with Him, it’s necessary to stop living in sin and start doing the will of God. In His perfect time, He will reveal Himself to you—He promised that!

3 – God’s Is Seeking Those Who He Can Count

Daniel

“For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”
2 Chronicles 16:9

Throughout history, God has always looked for those He can count on—those who are fully committed to Him. Think about it: if you’re a successful businessperson, you wouldn’t put your 11-year-old child in charge of managing your company. You would wait for them to grow in maturity, so one day they could inherit that responsibility.

The same is true with God. “To whom much is given, much is required.” He won’t give you a mission if you’re not ready to complete it. First, He will test your faith so that you can grow spiritually. Once He knows you’re ready, He will start to give you greater responsibilities. We have to understand that God is our Father, and just like any loving parent, He won’t give us something we’re not mature enough to handle.

Conclusion

Because of the battle between our flesh and the Spirit, sometimes obeying God can feel nearly impossible. But today, I invite you to pray to God, asking Him to give you a Christlike heart—a heart that, no matter how difficult the situation or how strong the temptation, will choose obedience over sin. Amen!
